Stephen Barber is chair of the Prix Pictet, which he founded in 2008.
The prize is widely recognised as the world’s leading photography award. It aims to harness the power of photography – all genres of photography – to draw global attention to issues of sustainability, especially those concerning the environment. The Prix Pictet has staged over 150 shortlist exhibitions in major cities around the world.
He was a managing trustee of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation from 2015-2024 and currently a trustee of the Japan Society, the International Tree Foundation and the Ofenheim Trust.
He is also a member of the advisory board of the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust.
He began his career as an investment manager with Samuel Montagu, later building their operations in Japan. Until 2020 he was head of communications at the Pictet Group, the Geneva-headquartered asset and wealth management business.
His history of the Group, La Maison, was published in 2023. He graduated from St. John's College, Oxford with a double honours degree in Mathematics & Philosophy.
